"An eminently satisfying series opener for mystery fans who want their downtrodden detectives to be appealing, clever, and unafraid of action."—Kirkus Reviews STARRED review

Joey Getchie has been property of the state longer than he was in parental custody. But he's a survivor, and he has a Plan: graduate high school and get out of the foster care system before it eats him alive. He bonds with Trisha, another foster, who seems to have lucked out when it comes to foster parents. A false accusation leads to a physical clash with his foster father, so Joey flees to Huntzel Manor, where he works part time. He takes up unauthorized residence and keeps a low profile, hoping to avoid attention.

But attention arrives in the worst possible way: a classmate is seriously injured in a hit and run accident, and Joey becomes the focus of the investigation. Why shouldn't he be? He had a violent confrontation with the same classmate just last year. And of course, he's a kid with a criminal record.

Except of course, he isn't.

Property of the State, first in The Legend of Joey series, is an edgy teen mystery featuring a world-wise protagonist struggling to grow up in a world where parents are the bad guys.

Foster teen Joey narrates events as he slowly uncovers a convoluted mystery, with a soupcon of romance added for spice. Taciturn Joey, a long-term foster kid, has learned not to actually voice the thoughts in his head and is aiming for early graduation and emancipation as soon as possible. But just because he doesn't talk much doesn't mean he's stupid. His clever internal commentary adds humor to this biting account of the alternative high school he attends, his classmates, and their families. Joey attempts to tread as lightly as he can, going to class and to his daily cleaning job at the home of a wealthy chess prodigy. He also cultivates a relationship with Trisha, a classmate and fellow foster kid who seems to have won the foster-parent sweepstakes. When Joey's foster father watches porn on his school-issued laptop, it's caught by sentry software, and Joey immediately is in a kind of trouble that seems to just build. Beaten up, homeless, and completely smitten by Trisha, Joey finds his curiosity and his attempts to solve his immediate problems uncovering hidden truths that lead to the solving of interconnected mysteries amid an eruption of violence. Joey's voice is raw and engaging, both foulmouthed and inclined to wordplay, and his supporting cast, though not notably diverse, is equally well-drawn. An eminently satisfying series opener for mystery fans who want their downtrodden detectives to be appealing, clever, and unafraid of action. (Mystery. 14-18)

Grades 9-12 I've been property of the state longer than I was in parental custody, Joey notes with his usual droll cynicism. A foster, as he calls himself, the hard-boiled teen doesn't let himself hope for much, instead focusing on a plan to graduate early from his alternative high school, emancipate himself from a brutalizing foster system, and strike out on his own to create a future. The obstacles are many. The school administration does not trust him and sees him as a delinquent and an easy scapegoat for various crimes and misdemeanors. To make extra money, Joey works for the strange Huntzel family, and they offer some refuge but also have some criminal secrets of their own. These secrets, along with an altercation in Joey's past, combine to create a mystery that eventually explodes in a macabre climax. A decision Joey's case worker makes near the end of the novel may stretch credulity a bit, but make no mistakeJoey's intense, gripping narration of his heartbreaking life will haunt readers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
