Will audiobook listeners enjoy a historical novel about Henry VIII's least interesting queen, the generally perceived to be mousy, insipid Jane Seymour? They certainly will when Alison Weir is the writer and Rosalyn Landor the narrator. Weir's meticulously researched and dramatically written portrayal of Jane is compelling, and Landor makes the myriad Tudor characters come vividly to life. The Jane we learn about is complex: ambitious, haunted, passionate, and religious. Henry is shown as a contradictory figure; one moment we hear a gentle, caring lover and the next the imperious voice of a despot. The intrigues, aspirations, and deadly secrets of long-dead courtiers are brought to light in a way that emotionally connects with listeners. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
