Alex Sand was spending the evening at home playing basketball with his two young sons when all three were shot in cold blood. A wealthy federal judge, there’s no short list of people who could have a vendetta against Sands, but the gruesome murders, especially that of his children, turn their St. Paul community on its head. Sand was on the verge of a major donation to a local housing charity, Heart/Twin Cities, and with the money in limbo, eyes suddenly turn to his grieving widow, Margaret Cooper, to see what she might do with the money. With each potential lead flawed, Davenport and Flowers are determined to chase every theory until they figure out who killed the Sands. But when they find themselves being stonewalled by the most unlikely of forces, the two wonder if perhaps each misdirection could lead them closer to the truth.

Nine months ago, U.S. Marshal Lucas Davenport and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) agent Virgil Flowers were both shot while working a case. Davenport is still on leave when he's asked by the U.S. Marshal for the Minnesota District to look at a crime scene where federal judge Alex Sand and his two sons were shot dead at home. Davenport can tell it wasn't a professional killing, but the case belongs to the FBI and St. Paul police. Weeks later, investigators are still spinning their wheels, so Davenport and Flowers take over. When they interview Sand's widow, Margaret Cooper, she and a friend appear to be hiding something. They also seem to have access to BCA reports and know information they shouldn't. Are the women suspects, or is Cooper trying to find the killer and enact revenge? Davenport and Flowers follow a tangled investigation with multiple suspects, seemingly one step behind the killer--and behind the determined widow. VERDICT The sequel to Righteous Prey reunites Davenport and Flowers in an intricate crime novel.
